Loco for Coco

I've never considered myself as a designer or "it' bag person.  Don't get me wrong there are many bags I covet but something has always prevented me from purchasing one.  I see young girls with 2.55's and Alexas' and immediately think how the hell can they afford that, or they must have terrible credit card debt.  Of course it could have been a present and then I make assumptions that they cannot truly understand the value of such an item.   The truth is i'm not sure I understand it.

I see the price tag of luxury handbags and imagine all the things I could buy instead.  The advertising for these items displays that the type of person to buy it, leads a certain lifestyle involving rivieras and yachts.  I assume that you are also paying for quality materials or craftmanship but for some reason I opt for the cheaper alternative that invariably falls apart within a few months.  I guess I'm just not sure of what I would actually be investing in.

As I aimlessly browsed through the bookshop one lunchtime I stumbled upon this biography of Coco Chanel by Justine Picardie.  I flicked through a couple of pages and was so enthralled I had to purchase it.  I had never really paid much thought to Coco (or Gabrielle) Chanel's background and had no idea of the links she had to aristocracy inspite of her working class beginnings.

The book also explains inspirations behind her designs as well as the creation of her famous No. 5 perfume and I was most surprised to find I had an affinity with her.  Chanel's designs are simple, classic and made for women to feel comfortable and that is something I can understand.  My reluctance to purchase luxury items was simply due to not wanting to be flashy.  This book made me understand the ethos of Chanel and that simplicity is elegant and stylish.  As someone who enjoys to make their own jewellery I was also inspired when I learned that Chanel mixed precious stones with glass copies in her costume jewellery in the Twenties.  Not that diamonds are within my creative budget but it made me realise that even with designer brands, quality can be a persons own perception.

Coco Chanel, The Legend and the Life, HarperCollins 2011.

This book is a great read and i'm not going to lie has made me a little obsessed with all things Chanel.  Learning about Coco Chanel as a person has made me understand why owning a Chanel handbag is desirable to me.  It has also made me want to learn more about other designers before I invest in their brand or products.  I can see an investment being made in the not to distant future and if I get cold feet about it there's always Christmas......

My life 2.0

In the last few years life has thrown me a few curve balls.  Think you got it all figured out?  Got a plan? BAM! Deal with that.
The latest shot was that the role I have been in for the last seven years and the career I worked hard to build is being made redundant.  My initial reaction was not sadness or worry but actually relief.

Yes there will be elements I miss, like that's it local, it's good money and the people are great fun but lately that's not enough.  I want more from life.  I'm at an age where pretty much all my friends are married with children.  I thought I'd be married with kids by 28 ( this seemed like a sensible, mature age to me way back when).  But as 28 came and went I still didn't feel ready to settle. My friends find it odd that I'm still single and whilst I'll admit I am fed up of attending occaisions alone and would love someone to share life with, I'm not desperate! Why do smug marrieds, to coin a Bridget Jones phrase, seem to think that just because two people are single that you are bound to be a perfect match?  My singledom appears to annoy them more than it does me.  Maybe that says more of their relationship than it does my status...

So I find myself with no ties.  I'm free to start over, to reinvent my life, to do something different and go wherever. My life 2.0 if you will...  It's the most unexpected curve ball I've been thrown but one that I'm excited about.
So what if the path I thought I should be on is not the one I'm on. I don't know where it will lead but for the first time  I'm ok with waiting to see where it takes me.

Watch this space.

Tease and Tassels

Hottest day of the year so far and I'm doing a two hour burlesque class. You could argue I've picked a good day to take a class that involves taking clothing off but the first thing we are told by our teacher (Miss Storm. E. Knight) is that Burlesque's origins were actually in cabaret and vaudeville skits of comedy.  It was the Americans who took the art of the tease and added the Strip.

Before we could start we needed to have our Burlesque name or rather we would be picking each others.  Awkward when I had never met the girl before.  A
couple of questions like favourite flowers or things and Daisy Von Bling was born whilst she picked for me...Starlight Blue on account of the blue shorts I'm wearing she wasn't sure where the starlight came from! We're informed that this name is our Burlesque persona and that when you are that persona you can get away with anything!

A quick change into some wedges and a brief warm up which included hip swivelling and we were ready to learn poses.   We learned the "S" pose the standard starting pose, the swimsuit which was a classic Marilyn Monroe pose   and of course the Betty Boop cutesy style poses.   We then tried a routine to practice our poses along with a slink or a strut.  Slinking in wedges it appears is not easy and I felt and (lm sure looked) more constipated duck than sexy seductress and lots of giggling ensued.

Next up was gloves.  We each put on a pair of sparkly sequinned gloves.  The key to this dance was to make lots if hand movements and show how much we loved our gloves.  My friend took this a bit too literally and was oohing and ahh ing at hers whilst everyone else was busy peeling them off and swinging them above their heads.  We then got to try our moves and the soundtrack was the very apt "The Stripper'.  As soon as the famous dah dah tha dah started the posing and peeling came naturally. As if on cue the bar manager walked in and everyone joked about what a show he was missing.  Funny, until he replied the room had CCTV!

We were fast running out of time and were given the choice of doing another routine or using the nipple tassels.  Tassels was the unanimous vote and we each gleefully applied the tassels over our clothing whilst Storm.E. Knight went for the traditional look.  There was a lot of bouncing and hilarity as they began to twirl in different directions.  Before we knew it the two hours had come to an end.
I would highly recommend a Burlesque class. Not only is it great for hen dos or girlie nights but its also a great confidence booster. As our teacher explained,  in Burlesque everyone is beautiful and the poses are designed to slim the body, accentuate what you like and use distraction to hide what you dont. It doesn't take itself too seriously and is simply a great giggle.  There were eleven of us, aged from early twenties to fifty and everyone joked about putting what they learned into practice...... No not that! I meant slinking around the kitchen in Marigolds and posing whilst washing up ;)

Storm E Knight was from Charm School and two hour classes cost approx £220
They offer a variety of dance classes for parties in various locations so there is bound to be something that tickles your fancy!
